Former President Donald Trump will cap the Republican National Convention on Thursday night with a speech accepting the party's nomination just five days after he narrowly escaped death in an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Trump is expected to deliver his speech at around 9 p.m. at the convention center in Milwaukee.

He told the Washington Examiner in an interview after his escape from death Saturday in Butler, Pa., that he scrapped the "humdinger" of a speech he had written attacking President Joe Biden to focus instead on "unity."

"The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be a humdinger," Trump told the publication a day after the attempt. "Had this not happened, this would've been one of the most incredible speeches" aimed mostly at the policiesthe president. "Honestly, it's going to be a whole different speech now."

He said he had heard from a broad swath of Americans since the attempt on his life and that his RNC acceptance speech will reflect the moment.

"It is a chance to bring the country together. I was given that chance," he said.

"This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would've been two days ago," Trump added.

The speech also comes as the White House confirmed that Biden has been diagnosed with COVID and that he will self-isolate at his Delaware home, a development that will keep him off the campaign trail for several days.
